Morley Inter 2 - 1 UniLaterals

A bit of a different fixture this week for the Laterals, with a late kick off and one of their rare away matches. Not a truly ridiculous concept, but it did seem to upset lads for the first 15 or so minutes, with a sleepy-looking Laterals under constant attack from Morley Inter. The defence held firm, and a dangerous early storm was weathered with the help of some wasteful efforts from the Morley forwards. Dan and Nev gave some early drive from defence before some passes started to find feet and the Laterals started to find some rhythm.

It was good to see Bernzo out at right-back after limited games this season. He was spreading the inside to Brad and down the line to Chris, who was good enough to back up from his Saturday MTAF match to help out the undermanned Laterals. Brandy was harassing the Morley defence, holding up the ball and laying it off, or making runs in behind the line. A high ball into the six-yard box went begging and jimmy volleyed wide, but all in all chances were limited for Uni.

Hiro was having an inspired half in goal, making a couple of great reflex saves and tipping a goal-bound shot over the bar in true ninja style. Despite the many corners conceded and various chances to Morley, the teams went to half time nil-all.

Half time saw a switch in ‘keeper, with Hiro moving to the outfield and Bernzo in the sticks. Dan was outstanding at the centre of defence, frustrating the hell out of the Morley strikers in the middle of the park and covering out wide often. Or, as the lads on the Morley interchange bench put it:

“That guy is fucking good, eh.”

“Yeah, he’s good.”

Mark took a painful one to the arm, forcing him off for the rest of the game. Hopefully it won’t prevent him being the hell maggot guy who is smoking all the bitches at his birthday shindig this Saturday night.

The Laterals were absorbing pressure again but eventually the bubble burst, and a dangerous corner was thumped home. The Laterals weren’t out of it by any stretch, and searched for a way forward, with Al Mac, Jimmy and Brad working through the centre of the park and Brandy running himself into the ground up front. A few through balls didn’t quite find feet and a couple of shots were hit at the keeper and Morley maintained their advantage.

Tempers were fraying in the Laterals defence, and Morley pressed forward down the right again, a ball spilled to the back post and Bernzo was left with no chance as a well placed shot doubled the home side’s advantage.

The Laterals switched to a 3-4-3 formation to search for goals, and Dan almost found one with an excellent long-range effort which the ‘keeper was lucky to tip onto the bar. Brandy’s hard work was rewarded late in the game as he buried an excellent shot into the right corner of the net, leaving the keeper helpless. It was only a few seconds after the restart though that the ref blew for full time on a disappointing day for the Laterals. 2-1 the final score and a week off with the bye to think about it.
